The purpose of this study is to give some basic information about the bicycle hire service (Vélo Star) in Rennes. The data are coming from the data platform of Rennes Métropole (link to data). The data available cover the period from June 2009 to August 2018. The analysis and visualisation are done with python using the libraries "bokeh" and "plotly" for the visualisation.
All the stations are within the ring road and are situated in Rennes's territory. 10 stations have access to the tube (orange on the map above). The station density is higher in town centre.
In June 2009, 39 stations are created. Three months later, 41 new stations are built to reach a total of 80 stations. Then until August 2018 the amount of stations remains stable between 77 and 84. Since August 2018, the number of stations drops to 55. |
The number of bicycle bases changes in a similar way as the number of stations. In June 2009, there were 814 bases. From september 2009 to August 2018, the number of base stays constant between 1,634 and 1,755. From August 2018, the number of bases drops to 1,145. |
The number of base varies from 12 to 30. There are 13 stations having between 24 to 26 bases. 29% of the stations have at least 16 bases. 56% of the stations have at least 20 bases. Only 11% of the stations have more than 26 bases. |
Since 2009, there have been 98 differents stations Vélo Star. The majority of them are still active (55%) and a big part of them removed (36%). A smaller portion of these stations has been moved (8%) and only 1% of them are now closed.
In city centre, the proximity to a station is good. Moving away from the centre, some zones are less close to stations especially in the South-West, North-West and North-East of the town. The South-East keeps a good proximity thanks to the station Poterie.
This map shows the accessibility to Velo Star service based on the distance and number of base per station. The city centre has the highest accessibility while moving away reduce the accessibility. Despite the distance to the city centre, the accessibility can be very high at immediate proximity to stations.
